The only thing that seems odd is that "swords-on-ring" means the same thing for Bulgarian awards as it does for certain German awards, to indicate a lower grade award with swords. But there is no grade of the St. Alexander lower than the silver merit cross.

The only thing I can think of is that, unlike most German awards, subsequent awards of the same class were permitted, so someone would have received a Silver Merit Cross with Swords, and subsequently a Silver Merit Cross without Swords, but with Swords on Ring. That doesn't make a lot of sense, though it would allow for both awards to be indicated by the same cross.

The award did exist though, and would likely be a junior NCO or lance corporal's award.

Thanks Dave! Maybe this guy did something very valourous and so he got directly the highest award of his rank and not the Bravery Cross which is not too rarely seen in german groups. But I never saw this one before and absolutely never on a german medal-bar. This guy got at least 4 gallantry awards (EKII, Hessen Bravery Medal, Austrian Bravery Medal Silver and St. Alexander), maybe also an EK1.

I have a lot of Bulgarian items. Here is my favorite though. It is a WW2 Bulgarian uniform. The Bulgarians had this cool combination of Russian/German items as part of their uniform history.

My Royal Bulgaria Collection

Hello!

I thought I would share these with all of you. Here is my collection of royal Bulgarian items. I have 5 items I still need to add to the display case. They are the silver 10 Year Service Cross (King Boris issue), a silver Order of Merit (King Boris issue), a silver Medal for Merit with crown (King Boris issue with misspelling), Medal of Bravery (4th. Class Balkan's War issue), and an Order of Military Merit (6th. Class, King Ferdinand issue). Sorry they are all small, but this is the best I can do with the image host website.
