Tudor Vladimirescu (1780-1821) was born of landed peasants in the region of Romania known as Wallachia. He led the Uprising of 1821 against the Phanariotes (Greeks), was unsuccessful, and martyred soon afterwards. He is a Romanian hero, at least to the Communists, and his image has appeared on both awards and money.

The Tudor Vladimirescu Orders and Medals are for the furtherance of the Socialist ideal and work towards the international cooperation between Socialist countries. It was awarded to military and non-military, Romanian citizen and foreigner.

The Order is in five classes. The first class is gold, or gold plated, with a wreath bearing simulated diamonds situated on the lower portion of the "star". The central medallion with Vladimirescu's image is also gold or gold plated. The second is identical but without the wreath and simulated diamonds.

The third class is silver or silver plated with green enamel behind Vladimirescu's image. The fourth class (shown) is silver or silver plated with red enamel behind the image. The fifth class is bronze with orange enamel behind the image.

The Medal is in two classes, both of which are shown here. The silver plated medal is for 1st Class, and the bronze is for 2nd Class. Hope all this helps.

A detail of the 1st Class medal. This is the image that is used for the order's central medallion, and just about everything else that bears a likeness of Tudor Vladimirescu. And yes, the Orders and Medals were issued beginning in 1966, making them essentially Communist, and were no longer awarded after 1989.

Thanks a lot Greg.Just bought yesterday the medal second class.
I have a bar from a DDR NVA general. He's got the same medal awarded.
Just trying to get all his foreign medals that belongs to the bar.
He's wearing the Tudor Vladimirescu between his 30 years NVA an foreign brothers in arms.
Is the order higher in rank than the medal??

Yes, the Order is of a higher rank than the Medal.

Would enjoy seeing your ribbon bar when you have a chance to post.
