I suppose these are not scarce, since I stumbled across about 50 of them, but WHAT ARE THEY? Various Budapest makers.

Thanks for the information. Sounds like I found a legitimate collection of older badges.
So, it looks like blue is for Infantry, as they are the ones marked "M.K.H.GY.E". Any ideas about the other branch colors: black, gray-white, yellow, yellow-orange, pale yellow, green, and red? Maybe they still use these colors. Red is artillery in almost every country, but the others will be hard to guess.

I have to say No In the Austro Hungarian Monarchy the branch colors were to sign the regiments. A lot of different colours were in use. One colour went to two regiments, for example if there was a blue piped coat with silver buttons it meant that the guy belonged to the 32. Inf. Reg. if the buttons were golden it meant the 16. Inf. Reg. ( I don't have my notes with me right now, so the numbers and colours i mentioned are just for example.) There are of course exeptions, but the system of the service colours of the Austrio Hungarian M. is very complicated. If I find out more I will let you know.
