what people know about the Komsomol

    hi

i know this is more based within the russian area but it did have a big influence on the youth of east germany. i was wondering if anyone knew more about the Komsomol (sorry about spelling if its wrong) and some of the items which were associated with this youth organisation. i know it has similar aspects to the FJD and the same sort of views but i was wondering what other people on the forum knew about it and if they have any items from the organisation or where to get them from

Ralph or Michael- you may want to move this to "Communist Bloc".

I took this from the internet:

"All-Union Lenin Communist Union of Youth (VLKSM or KOMSOMOL): A youth political organization. It was created during the First All-Russian Congress of Worker and Peasant Youth on October 29, 1918, and was initially called the Russian Communist Union of Youth (RKSM), RLKSM from 1924, and VLKSM from 1926. The Union's first program specified that it was affiliated with RKP(b) (Russian Communist Party (of the bolsheviks)) and saw "its task in spreading the ideas of communism and involving the worker and peasant youth into active construction of the Soviet Russia." Additionally, the Komsomol's task included the communist upbringing based on the involvement of the worker youth in the political struggle, supplemented by theoretical education. Besides that, the Komsomol was a more popular organization than the party since the party was a leader of the proletariat, its members were supposed to possess at least a minimal political qualificaton. Komsomol was an organization aimed at upbringing, it could accept even "raw material", uninitiated young proletarians. Sturcturally, the Komsomol (TsK VLKSM) was directly subordinate to the party (TsK VKP(b)). The 22nd Extraordinary Congress of VLKSM (September 1991) decided the role of VLKSM as a federation of communist unions of youth to be completed."

I have several Komsomol badges (top to bottom, left to right): 30th Anniversary of the Komsomol (1949), a VKLSM membership badge (Brass, mid '50's), Sixth World Youth and Students' Festival in Moscow (1957), A VLKSM membership badge ('40's-'50's), Constuction of the Komsomol Coal Mine in the Ukraine ('60's) and a Sixth World Youth and Students' Festival Sports Badge.

matt4how - Welcome to the DDR forum. Your question is probably better asked on the WAF Communist Block Militaria forum at: http://70.87.163.50/forums/forumdisplay.php?f=53 since this one is focused on East German militaria.

For a background on the Komsomol there is a handy Wikipedia article at: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Komsomol
