5th Anniversary of proclamation of the Romanian People's Republic

Well, at long last I finally was able to get a "5th Anniversary of proclamation of the Romanian People's Republic (A 5-a aniversare a Proclamãrii Republicii Populare Române). It's an RPR commemorative medal that I think is very beautiful and, well, sort of reminiscent of the labels on bottles of absinthe. But I digress; anyway, as an RPR medal, it's fairly difficult to come by and I thought I'd share.

A detail of the front of the medal... appears to be silver-plated bronze with the enameled metal set-in to the medal. Note the RPR seal... this is the second version of the seal of Communist Romania (the first is nearly identical but without the red star above), and will change twice more after 1965.

Astonishing enamel work and a gorgeous patina. Congratulations, Greg!

Hey Greg - CONGRATS in your latest find. I am for sure not to familiar with Romanian medals like you are. But this one has the Mongolian look to it. Does your medal have a Soviet type of suspension?

Yeah Ralph, pretty much standard Soviet-type suspension in brass. The Romanian's did not change the suspension to the straight type until 1965. I think they should have kept the Soviet type.

Hi Greg, I know NOTHING about these awards, so it was educational for me to see and hear about them, thanks!

                Great looking medal.

                Cheers, Ade.

                  Hi Greg,

From your recent posts it looks like you caught the Romanian bug. I had it several years ago and here are some links if you are intersted:

I have always thought that the Romanian decorations were second only to the Soviets awards in their craftsmanship and appearance. The Bulgarian also had some nice orders too.

I'm glad I picked mine up when I did becasue the prices on these item are through the roof. I paid $12 for my 5th Anniversary of the Romanian People's Republic. Now you can't touch them for less then $40 and up.

                  John

Yeah John, I know what you mean... this one costs me slightly over $40. I did, however, get the original case with it. Am waiting for that to arrive. The dealer I work with seems to save money on shipping if he sends the cases separate from the medals (???). The thing I have found about Romanian medals vs Bulgarian medals is that, with the Romanian medals, what you are able to find is IT. There are no more to be had. With the Bulgarian medals, there was a fairly large reserve stock at the mint, so it is possible to get many Bulgarian medals that have never been issued. Both are, in my opinion, nice looking awards (I do collect both). There's just something about the Romanian awards that I just can't put a finger on... the design seems to echo a certain "goth-ness" that can only come from the Carpathians.

The case finally arrived; it's a red leatherette, latching case with gold type.

And the medal in case. The indent for the medal is there, but it is not deep as in other cases. If the case is tipped, the medal will not stay in place.

                            Looks Great! Home sweet home.

I still don't understand the logic behind the shipping the case and the medal separate to save money, but who am I to say different
