Not sure if this will be any help to you but over on the main Wehrmacht Forum recently I started a thread regarding Russian Front medals. Most of the pictures are still there so you should be able to see plenty of examples.

The absolutely essential must have or you are doomed Bible of Soviet orders and medals is: "The Comprehensive Guide to Soviet Orders and Medals" by McDaniel and Schmitt. It is a huge thick all color book showing obverses and reverses, and fakes as of 1997. Out of print, $95--and if you don't get one of the few remaining copies, expect that price to go up and up when it hits "all gone."

I have known Igor since 1995 and he sets up at the Meadowlands show.

Believe me folks, I have several hundred dollars worth of CRAP from before I bought this book when it was still pre-Publication.

but before i could read your e-mail in time i have almost got the book you recommended from a dealer going by the name of Dmitry Markov, is he known to you rick, he does seem to be sound person, with the book he said you get check list free of charge.

What sort of area are you most interested in--WW2/Cold War/Afghanistan etc? I've got some fairly unusual Soviet stuff posted in here in the old pages if you click the "last 60 days" to "from the beginning."

I started with WW2 military, "retired" from collecting Soviet navy (at all), gobbled up what I could 1930s, settled happily into the "hard" Cold War of my childhood, drifted over into nasty State Security when research was shut down, and am now off on Soviet "secret" involvement in the Chinese Civil War, Korea, and other places into Vietnam and Afghanistan. ww2 realy i think, freind of mine brought some nice medals in to work the other day, not medals realy order of the red star, order of honour things like that, not expensive quite cheap but realy good quality awards, i thought i want some of that, but i do not know much about these awards. I understand can be quite complex to get into.
Mind you though still like the german stuff, but i think they would go together quite well in my awards medals case.

I also collect Soviet W.W.II orders and medals, U. S. W.W.II aviation wings in addition to the Third Reich items. Igor Moiseyev at Atlantic Crossroads, www.CollectRussia.com is the man to buy Russian orders and medals and decorations from. I first met Igor and his friend Nat in 1989 and purchased my entire Russian Medals of W.W.II from them. with an exception of a few from private collectors. They know their field, are the most honest and helpful dealers I have ever met. The book by McDaniels and Schmidt is a must and I am fortunate to own a few "book pieces" from Igor that are featured in the book. The Gold Star of the Hero of the Soviet Union, number 1712, on page 26 is in my collection with the entire grouping of a famous airforce bomber pilot. I am proud to say that I won the Show of Show's top award for my collection back in 1999. I owe it all to Igor and Nat and I highly recommend them as top dealers in their field.

I agree with Bill + Rick, the McDaniel and Schmidt book is a must...it's great reading to boot...full size colour photos make it well worth the price....I got mine (+ a few medals ) from a great dealer by the name of Alexei Merezhko:

Ask for help on the forum and you get so much you don't know where to start, all i can say realy is Brilliant.
