Speaking as a sailor ('79-'84), I would say that this is a unique piece; probably crafted by either the deck division and/or the ship's carpenter as a gift to the Captain and, as such, a gift to the ship herself. Not necessarily to the Captain of Aurora, but to a Captain in a Socialist Navy- the spirit of which is typified by Aurora.

The world's Navies have always had artistically skilled individuals that have produced marquetry (as in this example), scrimshaw, metalwork and intricate woven work with line (rope) to dress (decorate) the ship or provide unique gifts for special days, anniversaries or events. I believe this is what you have, and you're very lucky to have have it.

Hello Greg:
As recently shown on the PBS "History Detectives" TV show,
with a circa 1900 USS Olympia wooden picture door, such
famous ship art depictions were done by commercial companies
for public purchase. So this Aurora wood art piece could also be
such a product example made anywhere from France to China,
depends greatly on the material used (type wood), to physical
size (metric or SAE?), and the constuction - kind of looks like
Philppine wood art to me, especially if monkeypod or balsa wood?
But hard to say absolutely for sure without further research.

Kay:
My take on the value of things today, which I've already said
before on the WAF, is that all collectable items are only worth
what a seller asks, and a buyer willing to pay - a rather subjective
situation to say the least. Can't say I've ever met any ship wood
art collectors in my nearly 40 years in the militaria hobby, but if
you ever find an Aurora ship item collector, that would be who
would likely pay you the most, then again such a specialized
collector might likely already have such an item too. This always
seems to happen to me when I find something odd yet interesting,
and don't wish to hold onto it forever!
