    Afghanistan Medals and ribbons

    Greetings All,

I am not a collector of Com-Bloc or soviet medal but I need some information on medals issued to the Afghani Army under Soviet occupation. I am looking for Pictures, descriptions and sources for some medals that a basic enlistedman /NCO might have been awarded during his service with the Afghani Army.

I am not looking for original medals, repros would be fine. I am also looking for infor on the uniform and rank structure of the lower enlisted,NCO's and Junior officers.

Any help in this area is greatly appreciated. Thanks alot

Here is a thread about afghan medals :

They are not so common and now a bit expensive. You can find them sometimes on ebay. Uniforms and insignia are very rare. I know an Osprey book about the afghan conflict with some info on the afghan army.

For a NCO, a merit medal (long service, these are easy to find and cheap) and a bravery medal are IMHO fine.

    Fakes exist.

Am I correct to assume that this Soviet medal was also issued to Afghan troops? If so, then does anyone have any actual pics of the medal shown in wear by Afghan troops?

        Cheers, Torsten.

I believe that this particular medal was presented by the Afghan government to Soviet troops its called something to the effect of "The Medal from the Grateful Afghan People"
