Can one of you guys help me with the identification with this flag ? It's about 5' X 4", one sided embroidered, and was brought home from WWII by the US vet. His photo and some of his pals are seen holding it in the small period photo. If I could get some type of price on it's value as well, it would be appreciated. Thank, JR

...about your Soviet State Arms flag

Interesting flag, in that it is very different construction wise than the
normal WW2 era Russian made flags with the Soviet Union State Arms -
the arms being very simplified, and the lettering NOT done in machine chain stitch embroidery. The flag appears to be home made, and being
one sided is/was likely a wall decoration of some sort? Hard to put a
value on the flag, in that it is kind of crudely done, and as such I doubt
that it was any kind of an official flag, which are the more desireable
kind (an official example can be seen below).

In light of its size and the fact that it is one-sided, I would think that it was probably used as a backdrop behind a speaker or some sort of stage drape.
The number of banners on the seal reflect that it is WW II vintage, and certainly it is a simpler style that most political banners. But presuambly it traveled with some unit or another for some kind of "field use", and thus would not have been extravagantly made. I can imagine this sort of piece being used as a backdrop or table drape by a unit Commissar when holding a communist meeting with the troops. This, of course, is just speculation on my part.
As far as value goes...tough to say, but it certainly is interesting with a period photo of the exact banner being held by a group of American soldiers. I wonder what the circumstances were ? Assuming that it is in very clean condition, I suppose that if I owned it I would "ballpark" the value at around $400.

By the construction I wonder if it is even Russian made? As such, if I saw it at a show for even a couple hundred bucks, I would pass on buying it
myself. Guess I am spoiled by the glut of nice detailed Soviet flags that came on the collecting market after the Iron Curtain fell, and I even more
recently bought another Soviet unit flag via a well known online auction for around $200-USD, and I was bidder number eight! I like the Soviet State Arms flags with detailed wheat stocks, the "Workers of the World" national motto hand embroidered on each republic's language ribbon, and when the ribbons have shading, etc. as per another example shown below.

OLDFLAGSWANTED

JR. just to help you with some historical facts the Soviet Union had 15 republics and the biggest of them was the Russian Soviet Federated Socialist Republic (RSFSR), well known as Russia today. So as oldflag stated it is possible it's not "Russian made". I guess in this case it should always be stated "Soviet made" and not "Russian made".
It could also have been done in some Eastern European countries, but if you say it is a WWII piece and not a post-war piece I doubt it was made there. Anyway, it is in my opinion for sure a post-war flag if it was given to a GI. I doubt it was made injto the rush for Berlin.
It doesn't look like the manufactured flags we usually see. I would say like Bill said it could be a "home made" flag.
As for the price, I doubt that I flag like this would sell for $400. It seems a bit step in my opinion. I think something around the $200 would be a fair price.
Would it be possible to get a complete shot from the flag?
BTW, it is written on your flag "Workers of the World Unite"

...about the WWII collectables market

Don't shoot the messenger, but Soviet stuff just doesn't command
the higher prices that WW2 German militaria gets these days. It is
true that at a big show like the SOS and MAX, etc., a premium price
can be had, but per the recent pole in the "Military Trader" (Oct 2007,
page 12) 43% of the people who responded (310) said that "during the
past twelve months", that their "primary source of military relics" was Ebay. If you look there you will see lots of Soviet militaria listed quite
inexpensive - for example a Soviet flag pole top, even with a nice
factory marking, regularly sells for only around $10 - some that I've
been able to obtained for my own collection are shown below.

...more about collecting stuff

How true regarding the subjectiveness of collecting stuff. Non
collectors I've met over my nearly forty years in the militaria
hobby seem to always say, "you collect what?" or "I didn't know
anyone could collect such stuff", which sometimes makes doing
militaria show displays quite interesting, at least for me.
