    Russian Order of Victory

I'll never own or be able to afford an original piece but have always thought this order must be truely spectacular to see.
This one is a very repectable russian made replica with decent stones on a silver frame. Anyone have any other type replicas of this order?

    ORDER OF VICTORY COMMON COPY

I have had the privilege to see an original example of this extremely rare and beautiful Soviet Order. It was General Dwight D. Eisenhower's now in the Eisenhower Library and Museum, Abilene, Kansas. I also knew I would never own an original example and purchased a common and relatively inexpensive copy. It is made of base metal, has cheap glass stones which are not prong set. Later, I had the opportunity to acquire a nice silver example with jeweler set Ziconias. It is much finer detailed and even has the tiny set stones in the outside wreath of the center medallion. Here is the common copy.

Here is a close up of the silver copy. Note the small setting in the wreath and fine detail of the workmanship.

                  Buying an Order of Victory

Would be difficult. The only real unaltered one is the one that was given to King Mihail of Romania. I am not sure who has it now, but it was sold in a private sale. All the SAoviet Marshals ones are in Museums; Hermitage, Central Armed Forces Museum.

They made copies for collectors, and then real museum copies. the museum copies usually come in a nice box and display well.

Rumor is that Brezhnev had a few made for himself and that one was sold, albeit stripped of the diamonds, on the open market a few years back.

The only one ever sold on the open market was to King Michael 1 and is said to be in a Japanese collection and sold for near $1M US. Brezhnev's was called back and was a pin back verson.

I knew a man who was one of Ike's pilot's during the war. In fact, he flew Ike into the Soviet Zone for the ceremony at which Marshall Zhukov presented Eisenhower with the Order of Victory. I asked him if he had gotten to see the award? He had. He told me that later that day Ike held the Order of Victory in the palm of his hand and said "Look at that Son of a bitch! What am I gonna do with that Goddam thing?" Then he smiled and said, "Well, I guess it'll look good in a museum someday."

Which of course is where it is. And it does look good!

I see these Victory repros at all the shows.

Personally, I just can't understand paying the price of an ORIGINAL Order of Alexander Nevsky for... fakes.

"Cheap" decent looking replicas (like a Hero Star) that are needed for a "correct" uniform display, OK. I have a 40 buck brass Hero that "looks OK" on a general's tunic that needed one to fit the hole-- I was hardly going to pay 4 figures for an attributable REAL one to put on a 100 buck jacket.

But these things are hundreds of dollars... and "worth"

                          nothing.

Who was this Order of Victory attributed too? Montgomery's and Eisenhower's are the only examples on display outside of Europe to the best of my knowledge.

Many reproductions of great and rare orders sometimes are the only way a collector can hope to present a great worthy display of every example in a particular field. I was fortunate to have won the Best of Show with my Russian W.W.II orders, medals and documents in 1999. Had I not had the reproduction of the Order of Victory, labeled as a reproduction, I would not have had a complete representative of every order and medal awarded by the Soviet's during W.W.II. Even with just presenting an illusion of the real thing, I hardly classify the reproduction of the Order of Victory worthess.
