Hi Brett, I was of course hoping that there would be a simpler way of telling which ones are PLA than having to read Chinese... I have just had another chat with the guy that I got the badges from...he is a US Vietnam Vetran and took the badges home with him in 1972 an so, I know for absolutely certain that they are all pre-1972 made and that is at least a start I guess...he got them all in Vietnam.

I will check to see if I can find the symbols for the PLA anywhere that you highlighted...I would have thought that since he got them in Vietnam, that they are most likely to have been introduced to the country by members of the PLA... but, lets see....Cheers, Torsten.

Any thoughts on this photo perchance? Specifically the upper left hand Mao medal.

      Hi McCulloh!
The photo is for a member from the CPV[Chinese people's volunteers]army.Perhaps he is wearing a uniform at the period from 1953-1956 as you can see his hat doese not have a badge and there is a patch at his left chest with the writting of CPV army.
For the medals and badges counting from left,i can identify the one called the people visiting the PLA and badge of china korea friendship.
For the ribbon above the badges,i can not see the chairman mao's face very clear.I wonder if it is a chairman mao's badge or a special ribbon for a medal/order.Personnaly i have never seen this ribbon/badge before.

        thanks

        Thank you Redstar!
I looked over at the Collect russia site. The dove badge as you say, seems to be a victory/peace badge for the korean war. The left hand Mao medal is an Anti-America, support Korea medal from 1951 put out by the Central Committee.

And as with anything collectable there are always the fakes......

Even these low priced medals and badges are being reproduced. I have added some pics of the above mentioned medal/badge to show the real and the repro. Originals of these two cost less than $15 but they are still faking them....

          Cheers,
          Brett

Ah yes!I think i got the Anti-America, support Korea medal wrong.I mixed it up with some other medals.
Also i have asked about the medals and badges and ribbons at a chinese forum, the badge at second left is the long live peace for Anti-America, support Korea war badge, and the one next is the garaduation badge of the Antiair/flanking academy.
The ribbon actually might be the miniture national flags of Soviet unifon and China and DPRK.

                cool!

                wow! Thanks for the information.
Brett-those scans are awesome. The proliferation of Chinese fakes on ebay is scary. They are also getting better. It is really too bad, because a great and interesting collecting field is being destroyed before it even gets going!
