zips
Though I have had in quite a few leather items from the war, i do not remember any having zips; the only one that did was not army, it was an air flight suit. Though rare, zips were used in WWII at times ( such as flight suits). Though unusual, I can't think that it alone, compared to the rest of the coat, is enough to call it a modern set up. If there were other issues with the coat, then perhaps the zipper issue would be added to them.
There are some photos of Vassilevsky with a zip up jacket ( not sure if leather) during the 1943-1946 period; will see if i can find them in a few books.
