I need some help with this great coat

I have the opportunity to buy this but I need to know if it is legit and how much it is worth. I believe it is a infantry officers leather great coat but I don't know the time frame(I think it's WWII). This is the first Russian stuff to come in the shop and I don't know it at all.

Its got "the look" I have to say, the lining and the construct of the belt all seem very Soviet to me.

Never seen insignia on one of these before...

I tend to steer clear of these leather coats however as several of the Russian/Ukrainian dealers I buy some low value stuff from have lots of things like this...

No stamps I take it anywhere?

Hi Gary, I agree with Andy, it does have the "look". Any dates on the back of the buttons? Sometimes these can be dated.

I would say it would sell for £100.

Personally I'd plonk this around 100 quid, simply because its gotta sell to some goth type for that kinda money - what with being a black trenchcoat *and* with Soviet insignia... hey I'd have bought it in my day LOL

If I may, I'm going to lean toward the other side of the fence on this. I believe this to be a modern day coat, upon which insignia has been added. I'm not aware of shoulder boards ever being on these coats
(WW-II era,) and most perplexing is the inside liner and the zipper - all very modern day era looking to me. Although if the coat can be had for a small amount of money, then should it turn out to be just an ordinary coat, one still has a nice looking leather great / trench coat.

Also, the insignia and buttons, if real and therefore obviously of WW-II vintage, may in fact in and of themselves be worth the money for the whole "Kit". Something to consider.

Yes Michael, the coat itself is dubious, the insignia and buttons look ok, but even those maybe repro as I have seen plenty of repro insignia that good.

Still, around the 100 mark, nice goth coat, some groovy Soviet insignia and you'll be ready for the next Marilyn Manson concert

I have to disagree with the previous posts. These coats are not that uncommon in WWII and were often worn with insignia ( Rokkossovsky's is in the CAFM in Moscow; look him up in Wikpedia to see him wearing a similar one) or without (in my book on Soviet generals and Marshals there is General of the NKVD Esipenko's coat that is VERY similar in make). These leather coats were not issued, but were gotten and insignia was often added . I think the coat is fine, and is 1943-1949 era (the boards are 1943-1945, but that does not mean the coat is). It's a very nice coat and you got a good deal on it. If I saw it I would buy it for that price.

Zippers were often worn on WWII leather air force pilots coats ( short coats; i had one in a few years back), so they are not a feature for only modern uniforms.

Though there are modern versions of these coats, i do not think this is one.

Zips have a curious place in Soviet uniforms even right up to the 1980's.

They are very rare occurrences and used only when some other fastening method is not suitable.

I have only ever seen them on flying jackets/suits and some diving suits.

Because of this I have my doubts about this item.

Feel free to tell me about other Soviet items you have with zips... i have just one in my collection - a 1980's helicopter flight suit.
