This is a very good page about soviet awards. The page is slow and in russian but with very very good closeups of front and back of nearly every soviet award!

When you pair this with some of the good online translation services, you have a good source at hand. Not sure you can bypass the McDaniel/Schmitt book entirely, but it is a rich source, being constantly updated and revised.

For Russian=>English translation, I like http://www.translate.ru/srvurl.asp?lang=en - while not 100% and sometimes length-limited, it gives non-Russian speakers (like me) the gist of the page.
