On the eStand, majorpayne has put up a "Afghanistan War Commemorative Medal".
*DISCLAIMER* I have no financial interest in this transaction, and to be honest I don't care whether he sells it or not. I am not even a great fan of capitalism.*/DISCLAIMER*
But this is a very interesting medal.
It isn't the official Soviet campaign badge for this service. That one is the more familiar "Warrior Internationalist Badge":
Much broader than just Afghanistan, it was designed by A. Zhuk, and established 28 December 1988, initially for "performance of internationalist duty" in Korea, Algeria, Yemen, Syria, Angola, Etiopia, and Afghanistan. Later this list was expanded to add China (1924-1927), Spain (1936-39), Mongolia (1939), Egypt (1962-63, 1969-72, and 1973-74), and finally Cuba (1962-1964).
The medal that is up for sale is the "Medal 'Veteran-Internationalist'" and is a quasi-official award of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet, an "Umamatova Decoration".
Like the official award, it has a wider scope of award than just Afghanistan, as the legend on the reverse indicates: "Spain, North Korea, Cuba, Near East, Vietnam, Afghanistan".
And, of course, the eBay mob makes a hash of these, and others, and most all else.
