    USSR Caps

What is the exact difference between Soviet armor parade visor caps and Border Guard parade visor caps, both manufactured around the 1980s? They look pretty much identical to me so I would like to know how to distinguish them.

In short, the crown of the border guards cap was green in colour whereas the armoured officers parade cap was a teal colour. The border gaurds branch of service colour was navy blue bordered with magenta piping. The armouned officers colour was black with red piping, as was artillery too.

Thats just the thing. I have a cap I am trying to ID. The crown is green (like the Border Guards) and not teal. On the other hand, the band is black bordered by red (like the armored). I could provide a photo if anyone would be interested in posting it. My gut tells me its Border Guard but I want to be sure.

If its genuine, then it may be just a case of mistaking the colours. They are very similar looking. The navy blue band is almost black and contrasting with this the magenta piping does look red. The only real way to tell if its genuine is to check the label on the inside.

The label looks like the label on another cap I have that I know is Border Guard so I'm pretty sure this cap also is Border Guard. Does anyone have a picture of an armor label?

Sorry, I may have mislead you here. The label denotes the maker of the cap. There was no one paticular maker for each branch of service, These makers made caps for all branches of the military.
What I was trying to ascertain was that the cap was indeed original and not a post Soviet fake which seem to be flooding the market at the moment.

I have seen repros of some of the older Soviet caps, but I am talking about ones from the 1980s. Is there really anyone out there turning out fake ones of those? I mean originals go for $15 on ebay.

Yeah some "fake" (not really very convincingly) all sorts...

BTW meant to say, the furashka you have is not "armour", if the arm of service colour is black then its for "technical troops" which includes armour, arty, engineers, signals, chemical and construction troops.

I am pretty familiar with USSR caps but this one has me straching my head. The band is definitely black (technical troops) but the other colors appear exactly as the border guard caps I have seen. My guess would be something happened to the band to make it appear black instead of very dark blue. Of course, the rest of the cap is mint. Did USSR cap makers make mistakes?

I would check it again. The band is so dark on Border Guard caps that is looks black but is in fact Dark Blue.

Well if its green and not teal, then its PV.

One last thing, is the "black" band velvet or not?

                          No, its not velvet.

Well, you did get the earlier technical troops hats without velvet (I am told the velvet started with the armoured and gradually spread, although others say it came from railway troops...) anyway, velvet definitely wouldnt have been PV.

Got a picture you can post?

I can provide a picture if anyone wants to take the time to post it. Based on what y'all have told me, I'm sure it is not technical service. my guess would be border guard with a particularly dark band.
