Civilian cloth caps worn by Soviet soldiers as POW's?

Hi Guys, looking through many early war photos which show Soviet soldiers as POW's it is evident that many of them wear Civilian cloth caps. I wonder why this is and how come they kept such a thing with them while serving in the Red Army?

    Cheers, Ade.

    Ade,

Likely it is all they had as conscripts. Keep looking at those photos and you will see lots of unusual things like many enlisted prisoners captured early in the war wear uniforms that have no service color collar tabs. At first I thought maybe they removed them at capture, but it is just too common a thing to see and I have never seen evidence of hasty removal. No shoes is also reasonalbly common theme as is about every type of civilian coat to behold. Such was the state of many of the Red Army's quickly mobilized conscript units at the on set of Operation Barbarossa.

Hi Mike, thanks for adding your thoughts. I have observed the things that you mention too. It is an aspect of the war I am becomimg more interested in.

      Cheers, Ade.
