Bravery Medal won behind my appartment.

This was my latest find. Like the title says, right behind me (see map). These part of the red army was basically just passing through the outskirts of Berlin before heading further westward.

601 Rifle Regiment crossed the Havel in amphibious vehicles while under fire from the opposite bank. At the place of one of the landings is the factory I worked in for 15 years. It was built at the turn of the century and I was probably one of the few that ever noticed the repaired bullet and grenade/shell damage. Incredible that all these years later I eventually find a citation to one of the people that actually shot at it!!

Without the amazing research capabilities of my good friend Igor these details would have been impossible to find.
The photos really do the talking.

That is impressive research and for you very interesting as the medal was earned on your doorstep and former workplace.
Would be hard finding something similar again in the near future.
    Thanks for sharing.

        Hi Skip,

I love posts like this, really brings the war to a personal touch to know you worked and live in an area that saw the ravages of war and finding a medal group to that exact location. Really great research and it’s really great to see the pic of the recipient and the medals and map to go with it.

Congrats on an exciting grouping with your connection

Very nice! You also have the record card with it to see if both Bravery medals are indeed awarded to the same guy? Often award booklets are pimped up with added awards and I would expect the serial number from the 2nd award to be in the same handwriting as the first award in this case. Only the record card will show definite proof if both awards belong together. Myself I always wanna have the record card as well when I have research done, just to be certain awards belong together.
Apart from that, great to have a medal from actions in your own area

              Congrats to this find Skip.
Like my State Prize of the USSR for the Architect of the Treptow Memorial with Papers I got ages ago.
Today I'm a bit angry that I sold it to the DHM Museum.

Just had a Red Star researched, he also went through your area. Was a mortarman with the 250th Regiment (see map #3). Award was for action around Neubarnim and Zepernick.
