Yes, it has been faked. It's hard to describe what to look for, as the fakes are VERY good. However, they look a bit "flat", particularly on the reverse, there is a bit of a "shadow" around the lettering as the enamel isn't completely opaque, and the some of the enamel colors are just a shade off. I was able to pick out my first one when I saw it, but that's just because I've owned lots of them in the past. If you aren't familiar with what the originals should look like, you may well have trouble distinguishing the two.

The prices for these have really become ridiculous (then again, a common Order of Red Banner I used to buy for $35-40 now brings over $100 on Ebay). You used to be able to buy these for under $100 easily, I got mine for $130 about a year ago and thats a bargain price compared to what it costs now. Dave is right, if you have not handled a number of genuine pieces, you would be quite hard-pressed to tell an original from a fake in this case. Another feature of fakes is that sometimes golden border is missing on the green leaves.

I like the one Grant posted a link to though, I would take a chance on it.

            Grant-

I agree with Vadim - this one looks okay.

One of my best collecting deals came from a guy in a pawn shop in England on one of these in 1998. He had a smattering of Russian medals on display. This was the only "big" one. He was looking at 5ukp for the jubilee medals (still too expensive to this day.) I took a chance and asked him how much he wanted for it. He sucked in some air and said: "Ohhh... Now THAT one's an expensive one!" I braced myself for shock. What would it be? 100ukp? 200? 500???

He looked at it closely, looked at me, and slowly said: "That one will be 35 pounds."

I couldn't get the money out quick enough!!!

I agree, the Order of Friendship of People looks good. Nice low number.

                  Hello Grant,

Hope you come out a winner on this auction! I purchased my Friendship medal two years ago for $175.00. By far, it is my favorite medal in my Communist Bloc collection.

Well, it is a very low number award; since much later issues regularly sell on Ebay for $250-260 these days, the price for this one makes sense (plus prices tend to be higher when British and Russian bidders are involved).
