I would say this is a rather later than earlier badge with an "improvised" academy name shield which is oversized, shiny, and has two added atypical prongs which were spaced far enough apart to not have to go through the enameled part, but through two holes drilled through the metal border. This would probably be one of those badges originally issued without any name shields. An old one should be more like the badge below, even though there were more than one variant. Also, please note that silver was used in the production of the earlier badges.

Signs of military academies and military schools were installed for wear on November 15, 1950 "On the establishment of a sign for persons who have graduated from higher military-educational institutions of the Armed Forces of the USSR."
Mike, your sign (in Russia it is called "diamond") sample 1951-1957 and should be made of silver. But on your sign someone changed the central part (wreath) but fake or from some other sign. Here 's an example of an original diamond.

I thought they weer nick named "romb" and "poplavok", not "diamant". Is that something new, post-soviet?

I don't think the central part (soviet symbol) is a fake, it might even be from this badge, which I see as a late issue piece. It looks to me like the post broke off, and was crudely soldered back on.

Who knows, on the late badges the name shield was "glued" onto the badge. Perhaps this one came off, and the owner decided to add those prongs and drill holes into the metal border for a more robust solution. So, it could even be a badge in its original configuration just repaired here and there. Just my 2 kopeks

BTW, a beautiful reverse on Yury's early badge!

The sign shown by Mike on the left side of 7 tapes, this is impossible in 1951, must have 8.
And in English it is difficult to translate the Russian name "romb" and "poplavok"

I want to thank everyone for their responses. Yes, the Academy Badge about which I posted has 7 Republic Banners on the left side, which is most definitely an anomaly and not something for which I am able to find an example or an explanation. The total number of Republic Banners when those on the right side are counted with the seven on the left, place the badge in the later production era. But, as was noted, there are many oddities about this badge for which there does not appear to be explanation. Individually, the pieces all appear to be real, though perhaps parts have incurred damage or were borrowed from other Academy Badges, possibly to effect repairs. Regardless, it seems this particular Academy Badge cannot be verified to be 100% correct, so I will put it aside for now.

Your individual perspectives were greatly appreciated. I have Soviet bits and bobs here and there, but the Cold War era DDR is my primary historic area of focus.

7 were used during the final production years. So, I would say that this is a late badge that had something happen to it which damaged the screw post and made the shield come off. Possibly two unrelated events...

Owner repairs the screw post, adds prongs to the shield, drills holes into the border, and this is the outcome. What seems to lend credibility to this observation are the initials on the back that look like they were already there when the holes were drilled.

Of course it could be an otherwise doctored piece. IMO, it is a late badge in poor condition, no matter what was done to it and by whom.

In any case, the Academy Badge cannot be used for display purposes, and that is unfortunate.

Albert 's on your sign 8 tapes. The ribbons on the wreath marked the number of republics of the Soviet Union and could not be smaller, in any case after 1940.

Yuriy, generally speaking, that part I am not sure I understand. The union ribbons on the left side did go from 8 to 7 some time in the late 1950s. I am not sure which one was dropped, but the final design had 7 left, 7 right, and Russia at the bottom for a total of 15.

So, are you saying this particular BBA badge kept the 8 on the left side from its original design till the end? You said the badge was instituted in 1950, so I guess they were showing 16 republics on the seal at that time. But a short time after it must have been changed to 15. If you look at some badges they clearly show a drop from 8 to 7:

This one here also has 7, as would be correct for a pre-1980 badge IMO. I do not have the later version but can only guess that it too would have 7.

It is a little history. From 1940 to 1956 there were 16 republics in the USSR, from 1956 again 15. The big ribbon denotes the main republic of the RSFSR. When the design changed, I don 't know. Here 's my sign I got after graduating from military school in 1980.

For the historical connection, the Finnish-Karelio republic was absorbed by RSFSR in 1956 after a mere existence for 16 years. Hence the dropped 16th banner in 1956.
