    Malteser Hilfsdienst e. V.

    Gentlemen,

Since the DRK thread has just about run its course, it is time to look at some of the other humanitarian aid organizations in Germany. The other two that I would like to look at are the Malteser Hilfsdienst and the Johanniter. First though, we will look at the Malteser Hilfsdienst e. V. The following text is from wiki. I'll post pictures of my uniforms from the Malteser Hilfsdienst tomorrow.

    Gentlemen,

Now for the few uniform items that I have for the MHD. The first one is an early tunic. The style definitely reminds me of tunics worn during WWII. It has more of a green cast to the grey colour. It has the early MHD crest on the left arm and interesting round collar badges.

The next tunic is actually a DRK one badges for use by the MHD. If you followed the DRK thread above you will recognize this tunic.

My last tunic is a much newer one than the previous two and shows the trend to move away from grey to the blue colour used in current tunics.

Now on to the two hats that I have in my collection.
The first one has silver buttons and the Malteser cap badge. The maker is the one often seen in BW hats and was in one of my DRK hats in that thread.

This second hat is in a slightly different style than the previous one. Long time German military collectors will recognize the name in this cap "Alkero". It has gold buttons, and like the DRK cap that I posted above, probably indicates a higher position occupied than the previous MHD cap that I posted.

Below is the only MHD item I can contribute. (It's not among my collecting interests, but I was given that cap as a gift.) These caps are long obsolete; the MHD have been wearing black berets for a long time now.

However, this might be of interest. The YouTube channel of the Maltesers at Paderborn features 10 short videos (German language, obviously) in which MHD uniforms of the past 6 decades are presented:

Thanks for posting all the info and pictures. I've never heard of this organization until now and I don't think I've come upon any of the uniform items. Always a pleasure to learn something new!

                    Steve,

Thanks for your comments. As you can see from the links HPL2008 posted this was a large well equipped organization for many years after the war. It is somewhat smaller now that the cold war has ended but still very active. Here are few more pictures from the web on the Maltesers. The younger chap in the dark blue shirt is in the Malteser Jugend and you can see that written on the his shoulder patch.

                    Regards,

                    Gordon

Thanks for your comments. If you can find your items from the Malteser Order please post them to this thread. No doubt some of the people shown in uniform here would have received some recognition from the order.
