(At least into the 1970s; I don't know when exactly the metal shoulder board devices were adopted.)

    The Waffenfarbe for the medical service was dark blue both in the Wehrmacht and the Bundeswehr, which also fits the dark color seen in these photos.
    I'd say, HPL2008 is spot-on, he probably was a medic.
