The amount of effort that has gone into "aging" reproduction helmets is pretty impressive, IMHO. There's both a wide variety of damage/aging as well as simulated timeframes and fronts. This complicates identification. However, the rim is the #1 way to rule out post war BW or BGS.
In general I think it is best to assume that if it looks like an FJ helmet that it's a repro. If you don't have detailed pictures or expertise, pay only reproduction prices on the assumption it's fake. If it turns out to be real, then you made out well. If it is indeed fake, you lost nothing.
