Sanitatstruppe stick pin

Gentlemen,

I have a Sanitatstruppe stick pin which appears to be a bit unusual. It is in the shape of the Sanitatstruppe beret badge but has a red cross in the centre. Anyone know why the red cross was added? Perhaps to identify the pin more clearly?

Thanks. I thought it might be Red Cross but didn't know where to go to find it. Now I can put it in the correct riker frame.
