Help needed for badging a Fliegerkombi

    Hi all,

I'm looking for some help getting a TruVsu 87 Modell B Fliegerkombi badged to it's former glory. I know almost nothing about LW unit badging, so I'm useless at this.

Over the left breast was a standard height nametape and above that was a badge about the same height as a tactical badge, but not as wide. It is positioned along the left edge (closest to the center of the chest) instead of being centered over the nametape. Sorry, I forgot to take a picture of it.

    Here's some pics:

There were two badges over the right breast. It looks like a rectangle for the upper badge and a tall shield type for the lower badge:

There was one round badge on the right arm:

Any help you guys can give I'd very much appreciate!

    Thanks!

    Steve

    Steve,

This is a nearly impossible task. Which of course is not what you wanted to hear. There doesn't seem to have been any standard as to how these badges were placed. I tried to look up some examples on the net but all of the ones I saw had multiple badges applied by collectors and were useless as examples.
Unless you know what luftwaffe units were issued these fight suits for trials you will just have to guess. Almost all Luftwaffe squadrons had shield shaped badges at this time and they were probably made locally so they could vary in size. So just pick one, or you could measure the squadron shield shape on your suit and send me the measurements. I could then compare the measurements to shields I have in my collection. Perhaps we can find a close fit. You will never find an exact fit.
As for the other badges, they were probably a name tag and a tactical insignia as you have guessed. At this time they were usually done as two tags. Sometimes only a name tag was used. Later it became one tag containing both pieces of info.

    Regards,

    Gordon

No wonder why I don't know much about this. I think maybe I knew this many years ago and got scared from even trying

OK, I'll take some measurements and hopefully, with your help, I can get things close to what they once were. I also have a TruVsu camouflage kombi that I might as well do at the same time.

Thanks for your generous offer to help out!

        Editted.

Actually now that I think of it, here's a picture from this years Tag der Bundeswehr in Fritzlar that I attended. The fliegerkombis of the crewmembers I posed with should give you a rough idea

Excellent photo! The right chest badge is for the squadron, but what is the purpose of the badge on the right arm?

I had a closer look at the stitching over the left breast pocket and I believe there was a strip of velcro for a standard name tape that was removed and a rectangular name badge was sewn on instead.

What are the chances of finding a used name badge?

The right sleeve patch is usually a novelty patch for the aircraft type. Some guys had the Bo-105, or PAH-2 Tiger, NH-90, UH-1D etc etc. The name badges I've seen come up every now and again on ebay.de you can also sometimes get the blank name patches with the qualification badge and aircraft type on them and all you have to do is have the name added.

                Steve,

Redcatcher has a good suggestion here. You'll notice from his picture that the aircraft on the name tag matches the type of aircraft being flown. Therefore, the aircraft flown by the squadron who's badge you used would need to match the aircraft on the name tag. I haven't seen authentic used name tags, of the type in this foto, for sale very often.
I don't have any squadron badges in my collection that are as big as the size that you sent me. As I said earlier, the chances of you finding badges to fit the sewing holes in your trials flight suit are virtually impossible. Since flights and flight jackets were re-issued and the badges were changed to match the squadron perhaps you shouldn't bother trying to find ones that fit the stitching holes on your flight suit. Just get a matching set of badges and go with that.
One thing I have noticed lately is that velcro backings for badges aren't always cut to the same size as the badge.

                Regards,

                Gordon

                  Great info!

Dang, I was hoping for used badging to match the used uniform. Matching condition is one of the things I try to hard to do when possible. But since it seems nearly impossible, I'll go with new badging.

I'm going to follow Gordon's suggestions and set this up for JaBoG 38. I'll have to improvise on the "novelty" badge unless anybody has anything specific to suggest.

A lot of the novelty patches turn up on eBay regularly. The most common are the Fighting Fulcrum patches of the Luftwaffe MiGs during their time at Laage but some of the others turn up too including the Phantom and Tornado

Steve, I tried to complete a leather jacket some time ago ... even with the help of the former owner it was near to impossible to get the correct bades as many of these were individually made in very limited numbers. Only common stuff like the "50 years Phantom" are easily found...

                      Something off topic:

@RedCatcher: Sorry that you never received an answer to your last mail ... the adress you used was correct but I was not able to answer as all of my messages were repelled by your host system !!

Interesting there must have been a technical glitch I remember that there was a message sent out about it at one point. My email should be fine now I'll send you a PM shortly Jens.
