I'd like to see a BW helmet that would fit those guys. My guess is a Size 78 would be needed for that middle guy!

Cheewbacca in uniform.... Joke aside, by the standards of the time it was allowed to wear long hair when using a hairnet in the early 1970's "German Hair Force". If memory serves right Helmut Schmidt cancelled the Haarnetz Erlass (hairnet edict).

I thought it was just the Dutch that were known for their long hair (even when in The Service), but this proves the West-Germans had similar rules...

The BW had standard issue hair nets. That pretty much says it all

That's maybe because they weren't called Soldiers but Citizen in Uniform to get away from the militaristic image of the German Forces from the past.

The long hair/hairnet experiment was very short-lived though, as noted above - only 1971/72.

                        Hi,

the first hair nets had been very fine:

                        http://www1.wdr.de/themen/archiv/sti...chtag5406.html

When you used them, they were destroyed very fast.

The next net was more resistant and was still issued several years later in mob exercises to reservists, see the last post on 18. Juni 2014:

Such a net is a "must have" in a Bw-collection!

In the 70's we all looked like that, so it didn't seem that "stupid" at the time (hey, at that time, guys with short 'back and sides' looked stupid).

I cringe now, every time I see my photos from that period.......

                              We DID look that stupid.
