Bundeswehr Colonel found dead in Iraq

Just heard this morning that the Leader of the German Bundeswehr in Iraq found dead in his quarter in Erbil.
Try to find out what happened as the news don't tell much about it.
Leaving his Wife and 2 Kids to my knowledge.

This isn't the first time that I've been reminded that soldiers in a combat zone are not immune to things like heart attacks, strokes, blood clots from minor accidents, etc. Similarly, soldiers die from things like fork lifts dropping things on them while performing routine work or trucks rolling over due to bad road conditions and not IEDs. For some reason it "feels wrong", but soldiers are simply Humans in uniform and therefore susceptible to everything civilians are. Er, and being shot at and blown up too.

          RIP, Herr Colonel.

Indeed, soldiers do not only die from combat, and when you check out the details and actual statistics, you can be surprised by how many die of various accidents (manipulating weapons, driving vehicles), and of natural causes. Look at General Stumme of the Africa Korps.

Or General Patton! The war was OVER and he died as a result of a car accident. As the old saying goes, "truth is stranger than fiction".

One of our MiG-29 pilots died in 1998 in former Yugoslavia as a Luftwaffe liaison officer when the Heer vehicle he rode on top capsized and buried him underneath ... actually, he was the only FULCRUM pilot of the Luftwaffe who died in active duty.

When I was in Baghdad in 2007, a Marine died of a heart attack while running around the embassy. Healthy, I believe early to mid 30s...just one of those things. We also had 2 killed in vehicle incidents...1 in Iraq, the other in Afghanistan. It's a shame when a troop dies in a combat zones no matter how he dies, but there's not a troop I've ever met who, if he had to die in a combat zone, would much rather it be in battle.
