Miners Honour Badge for Service in Mine Rescue Teams
The mine rescue teams are in charge of the rescue operations underground. Under mine rescue means all measures and equipment for rescue of people and the preservation of property by explosions, in mine fires and other events in underground mining among which toxic gases may occur. For all mines there is a requirement to put into place mine rescue. Joining the mine rescue team is voluntary. Each Mine rescue worker must demonstrate a high level of physical performance. Regular training in theory and practice are used to prepare for the worst. The Mine Rescue Service was first used in a fire disaster on the Saarland mine Luisenthal in February 1962, when 287 miners were killed. This was the first time that the general public became aware of mine rescue service nationwide.
The mine rescue-decorations take under the Awards of the Federal President a special position. It is unlike any other national awards to a profession being reserved only for the workers underground. The award honors individuals who have voluntarily and unselfishly risked their own lives to use in an emergency in addition to their hard work to ward off dangers underground.
Grubenwehr-decorations (1953)
The mine rescue-Medal is a national award of the Federal Republic of Germany for special personal achievements in mine rescue . It was instituted on July 14, 1953 by the then Federal President Theodor Heuss and is awarded in gold and silver.
Requirements for award of these decorations;
Grubenwehr-decoration in silver
The mine rescue-decoration in silver can be awarded in accordance with the Foundation adoption:
1 - Members of a mine rescue team, who were involved in a mine rescue for at least for 15 years and have shown exemplary service,
2 - Members of a mine rescue team with shorter length of time of service, when they have performed in the mine rescue service in an exemplary manner and had to leave the service because of or due to an accident in the service of mine rescue and
3 - Members of a mine rescue team or other miners for bold and decisive behaviour in the use of mine rescue or rescue work.
Grubenwehr-decoration in gold
The mine rescue-decoration in gold can be awarded in accordance with the Foundation adoption:
1 - Members of a mine rescue team, who in a mine rescue service have completed at least 20 years in an exemplary manner,
2 - Members of a mine rescue team with a shorter, but not less than fifteen years of service if they have performed in the mine rescue service in an exemplary manner and had to leave the service because of or due to an accident in the service of mine rescue and
2 - Members of a mine rescue team or other miners, which have already been awarded the mine rescue-decoration in silver, for repeated courageous and resolute behaviour in the use of mine rescue or rescue work, and where in such action is not awarding the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic
Appearance, texture and method of wearing
The mine rescue-Medal is a medal and is accordingly conferred either in silver or gold grades. The obverse shows in embossed marking the symbol of the mine rescue team which are a mallet and hammer that are crossed. Both icons rest on the cross of mine rescue. The cross is enclosed by a wreath of oak leaves. On the cross the crossed miners tools rests a representation of the federal eagle . The reverse of the medal bears the inscription: For / special / earned / in / pits / Rescue / beings . The medal is worn on the left breast on an orange band, which is bordered by black stripes and suspended from the band is a medal, 35 mm in diametre, in the conferred stage of silver or gold.
Award procedure
Proposal authorization
The proposals, which should result in the awarding of this Medal of Honour are to be submitted in alphabetical order to the Prime Ministers of the respective states, the Governing Mayor of Berlin and the senates of Hamburg and Bremen and to the head of the Presidential Office in duplicate. This will then brings the decision to make the award to federal president. The Vorschlagelisten are also prepared the award certificates and index cards accompanied by official specimen.
After signing of the deeds by the President they, with the decorations listed on the Vorschlageberechtigten will be sent to the Prime Minister, Senate of Hamburg and Bremen, and the Governing Mayor of Berlin. This gives them the responsibility to hand over the medals to the recipient in the name of the the Federal President.
Handing
With delivery of the Medal of Honour to the awardee a an award certificate, which bears the signature of the President, is presented. The medals themselves will become the property of awardee once they have been with handed over. Upon the death of the owner, the decoration remains his survivors as a souvenir. Its return is compulsory for them to return the decoration to the awarding body.
Spare and exchange
Lost decorations will not be replaced. However, the awardee is entitled, at their cost to purchase a replacement piece. The manufacturer of the medal is the company Steinhauer & Lück in Lüdenscheid . Previously awarded mine rescue-decorations, in the new model (though only in the Silver version) can be exchanged for a resolution.

The mine rescue-decorations from 1953 is not the first state award, which is awarded in Germany to deserving miners. Historical predecessor are the mine rescue-decorations from 1938, the Kingdom of mine rescue-decorations from 1936 and the Pit Commemorative Badge of the Free State of Prussia from 1934
Merit award and certificate
The award is both recognition of many years of active and exemplary work in the mine rescue teams (15 years of service for the Silver level, 20 years of service for the Gold level) as well as individual acts of salvation. Primarily, therefore, it is a loyalty service badge. Each stage of Honour may be awarded only once. In awarding the Medal of Honour in Gold of the preceding stage is not required. Each excellent Wehrmann receives the portable medals and award certificate and a miniature medal.
