    Unknown Bag

    Yes, there I something I don't know.
Got this Bag from a friend who told me there is a guy with a thousand of them.
My guess is Civil Defense Gas Mask Bag, but as I never saw this Cake-Piece Shape or Style i'll better ask the Experts. The reverse of the Fabric is grey coloured rubberized and there is not a single Stamp on them.
Is there anybody who ever saw them?
We got told it's Bundeswehr, but as said before, my guess is Civil Defense.

    A view inside.
On the back you see a Snap Button Pouch, as I think for the Gas Cape.

I agree it is unlikely to be Bundeswehr. As you well know, the BW is very consistent about marking its items in an obvious way. BGS, Polizei, ZB/ZS, THW, etc. are also very good about marking their items.

My guess is a civil defense gasmask bag or (as you suggest) gas cape. The rubber liner is what makes me think this.

        Maybe a little misunderstanding.
My guess it't for a Mask AND Cape.
On the back of the Bag you see a stud button under the Rings for the Strap hooks, there is a very flat compartment for the Cape and the large one shown for the Mask.

Yeah, that's what I mean too The bag is obviously large enough for a gasmask. I hadn't thought of the cape until you mentioned it.

I do have a very early BW piece in similar canvas. I think it is a document case. But it was marked, IIRC, with a NATO code and something else. I don't know where I put it, but maybe I can find some pictures. I know I posted them to this forum when I received it, many years ago.

Not look very West German, is there anything to point to this origin of the bags? Although some early Bw and ZB equipment has this "American" style, not seen anything like this. All the known civil defence gasmask bags are very different shape. Another possibility is carrying bag for medical (or other supplies), which could explain rubberised interior also.

Hoover or Simon specialise in this area and would probably know, if it ZB/LSHD, etc.

I come across a lot of US style bags wich are reproductions for civilian use .
Some have age as well ; seventies or so.
The all have the military style hooks like the ones on Nico his bag.
Some even have the US letters stamped on the front.
However the quality is lesser then army issue and the slide buckles to adjust the carrying strap are made out of inferior metal.
Those buckles can often be bend by hand and are thinner then regular ones.
Sometimes on the bags I mean the slide buckles are of anodised aluminium.
Rubber or waterproof interior isn't uncommon for civilian bags either.
I'll bring back the next one I find to show .
