Sportmans guide recently got these in and the price was attractive so I snagged a couple. I know they're German and I assume by the color that they are not regular military but I really have no idea what they are. I'm sure you guys do though so please enlighten me. Both are marked H. Rogge Berlin. One was made in 1954 and the other (the one pictured here) is 1958. They are essentially identical. Condition is by no means collector grade but they are 100% useable which is what I bought them for anyways. So, let's take a look.
First is next to a Swiss rucksack for size comparison:
Although you can only see two lashing points on the top flap, there are actually five. Also not shown are two lashing points on each side of the pack.
Manufacturer's mark. Something was glued on this area at some point (I assume a soldiers name tag) and there is still glue residue in some of the letters/numbers:
The shoulder straps are felt backed:
The right shoulder strap is set up for easy removal It's shown here still attached to its anchor point at the bottom of the pack:
The left shoulder strap snaps onto its anchor point:
Although not shown in the picture of the rear of the pack, both shoulder straps have an additional strap for hanging gear on similar to normal equipment suspenders. Each has a typical adjustable hanging tab:
Here's the inside of the compartment on the outside front of the pack:
The inside of the top cover also has a pouch:
A close-up of one of the buttons:
Inside there are four compartments. The main one is divided in two with a larger and a smaller one. Additionally, there is a compartment on each side of the main one. Three of the four can be seen here:
The long reinforcement running along the rear top in the picture above is hard and reminiscent of a dogs rawhide chew. I assume that this is to help the bag keep its shape while strengthening where the shoulder straps attach.
So, as stated, these are not in unissued collector condition. They have obviously been issued but I took one on a camping trip this weekend in near zero temperatures and it performed just fine. I assume that these will hold up for years of use but I would like to know what I'm lugging around. So what are they guys? Thanks!
