Just picked this up, should have it by Wed. Nice Clemens Wagner Braunschweig dated 7-12-1955 BundesLuftwaffe Off. overseas cap, I think it's a 58 size. This is the earliest I've owned. Enjoy all. DL.

Nice looking cap but I have some questions. Is the cap blue or grey?
Was the schiffchen on issue in 1955?
I have a few early caps but none have Auftrag numbers in them.Last edited by SprogCollector; 02-04-2015, 05:23 PM.

With a date stamp 12/55 it is a piece of the earliest equipment made for the Bundeswehr !! The first soldiers were sworn in late in 1955, a larger number started to join in rom January 1956 onwards.
Therefor 1955 made items are real gems!! Those made in 1956 are quite rare, but finding something like this is only possible by chance...
Congratulations !!

To my knowledge the Luftwaffe had it from start on while the Heer started experimenting in 1957. At least in one of the educational films found on Youtube dating 1957 you can see a recce unit with all men wearing overseas caps. The replacing of the M56 was a slow process ending somewere in the 60ies...
like Splittertarn and the Affenjacke which were still worn by some in the mid 60ies...

Hi,
I have my problems with this "Schiffchen".
Luftwaffe and Heer had in 1955 the same dark grey colour, nothing with blue.
An officer, silver piping, had always an embroidered cockade. And that seeems to be an olive woven cockade?
The label is very unusual.
Therefore I don't trust this Schiffchen as a Bundeswehr Schiffchen, sorry.

I've probably seen only a few hundred photos from 1955/56 so not a huge sampling but I've not found one with the schiffchen in use. The schirmmütze and M-56 are seen almost exclusively in both field and garrison photos.Last edited by SprogCollector; 02-05-2015, 07:51 AM.
