This hood was worn to protect the head, and most of the face, from flash fires. The attached pictures show it worn by gunners on board a ship but it was also worn in other circumstances. For example; naval fire fighting crews, and there is an excellent picture of this hood worn on page 184 of Kunstwadl's book. He says, in the caption next to the picture, that it shows the Operations Centre of the ship although I think it is more likely the fire control centre of the ship but that is just a guess on my part.
This appears to be the same hood as is worn, for the same purposes, in the Royal Navy and made on contract by the same company for the Deutsche Marine.
