Hello all!

I bought these two diploma's some time ago. I have always had an interest in the whereabouts of members of the SPD during WW2.

As you can se, Georg Mahlstedt was a long time member of the SPD in Kirchweyhe.


My question is:

How did the SPD calculate membership-years? If he was a member for 60 years, that would mean he was a member all the way through WW2?

A very interesting document. It is possible that this man was a member of the SPD during all of this time and from this document it would appear that they did add the years of service cumulatively. The SPD was outlawed by Hitler in 1933 with the adoption of the Enabling Act . Many SPD leaders were killed or fled to exile where the party continued to exist as Sopade . In 1945, the SPD was one of the four political parties the Allies declared legal. Its political views have changed a number of times over the years and they are quite different now than when the party was first founded.

SPD membership-books is somewhat of a smaller part of my focus, but I find it fascinating that these people might have been more or less outspoken opponents of the nationalsocialists
