Apparently this is a Kyffhäuserbund (German Army Veterans' Association) medal to remember service during the 1972 Olympic Games in Munich.
But what exactly was it awarded for? I doubt that it was for deployment during the hostage crisis, since the army was constitutionally forbidden to engage in "combat" in Germany itself.
Maybe it was for logistical help and policing, and for being stand-by in case something went wrong? But then again did the Bundeswehr have such tasks, as opposed to the police and the Bundesgrenzschutz?
Or was is even an award to those (ex)soldiers who participated in the games as a sportsman?
Who can help?
