One last kick at the cat.
Great early polizei photo TJ. Unfortunately, impossible to identify the state, or possibly the city, that it is from. Although, more likely a state police uniform than a city one. The city police caps that I have in my collection, and those I have seen in pictures, tend to use a blue woven cap cord.
I would say that the uniform in TJs picture is dark blue. The picture below illustrates some cap colours, from your left to right, from the states of Hamburg (60s), Neidersachsen (70s), and Bavaria (80s). Blue state polizei uniforms tended to get lighter in colour from the 50s through the 70s when Green became the predominant colour. I picked the Bavarian hat because of the silver piping. There is a strong possibility that the Bavarian hat is for a prison guard. This also illustrates the huge variety in uniforms worn in West Germany post WWII. Until the mid 70s, numerous large cities had their own police forces. Some states had prison guards, river police, harbour police, court guards, etc. All commonly wore the police star. A variety of uniform styles and colours was also worn in these police like organization to include brown.
And that is just considering German uniforms. Many other European countries had police uniforms similar to Germany.
