    Help ID Rank Stars

I have been searching everywhere I could imagine and cannot identify what these are for. I picked them up recently at a flee market in Germany along with some earlier shoulder rank insignia. Regarding the early rank, what is the metal hook for that is sewn inside?

What is this please? The star measures 2.5 cm wide.

These type of stars was ment to be worn by officers candidates sewn on the lower forearm of their tunics between somewere in the 60ies and the 70ies.

These "star" badges were worn between 1963 to 1967 on both lower arms of service and work tunics to indicate Aspirant Officer rank (Officer Candidate).... Unteroffizieranwarter (UA), Offiziersanwarter (OA) and Gefreite OA, they replaced silver litzen worn around the width of the shoulder strap base and a horizontal cloth bar chevron for the upper arm (UA) for these ranks, in 1967 both the silver litzen and horizontal bar returned, to being worn on the shoulder strap, and these "star" badges were discontinued..................The ones you show are for the work uniform.
      Prost ! Steve.

        Hi,

these stars are only for officer candidates. It is a little bit difficult.

Unteroffizieranwärter (UA) had always one wide horizontal stripe above the rank. After successful course they wore additional a bronze stripe on the shoulder board.

Officer candidates had first a wide silver stripe on the shoulder board.
Next, since the beginning 60s/mid 60s, they had to wear the silver star on the lower arm. (old soldiers asked: is there the rank Oberschütze again?)
Later, since 1982, they had to wear a small silver stripe (Kordel) on the shoulder board.

Next does anyone have photos of them being worn?

            Hi,

to the left the star in olive, in the middle the star in gray, and to the right the wide silver stripe. It was the transitional phase:

Like many other Bw-things this insignia had a nickname as well. The "inofficial designation" used by the troops was "Taubenschiss" (pigeon's sh*t).

                Regards

                    Hi,

I never heard this word for this rank sign. I think, that it was a local used word, not Bw universal used.

Uwe, this may be correct. Like many other things, I've learned that term from my father, who "grew up" in the early Bw. At least you'll get some hits, if you guhgl "Offizieranwärter" and "Taubenschiss". One defining this term as for the similar Marine Offizieranwärter insignia:
