    1951 Messkit

Last year, I finally found a very early BGS(?) messkit, something, that I look for a long time and almost doubted, that it exist. The messkit is almost 100% identical to WW2 and only 2 piece. Outside very burnt from Taschenkocher probably, inside is very pitted and has several holes - ugliest messkit, that I ever see.

CFL51 stamp is visible in above photo. Also stamped on side. Here with my CFL51 canteen, like worn by BGS, ca. early-mid 1950s (still search for early Brotbeutel).

Paint comparision with CFL 51 canteen cup and very early BGS-marked Lufft-Bezard march compass. Although Bepo could have used it also, as formed 1950, I have never seen anything earlier than 1951. As Bepo was very poorly equipped at time. Also have early BGS gasmask can on way with this colour paint. This should indicate, that BGS used light grey-green colour before dark green.

I have also another 1950s M31 messkit, that I buy from German dealer, but I am not sure about its origin. It is 3-piece and stamped ALUGA 1958 only (never seen this maker before). Paint is slightly greener than CFL51 messkit. Possibly early Austrian Bundesheer? I had once 3-piece LSHD M31 messkit, but inner tray was different.

On right with CFL51 messkit on left. Note that handles loop are lower attached than West German.

      Klaus,

Congratulations on finding this piece. I know you've been on the hunt for a long time.

BTW, great pictures of a great set-up.

Perhaps Bernhard can help us out with the possible Austrian mess kit.

      All the best,
      TJ
