    Nice Color Splittertarn Picture

    Gents,

This nice post card featuring a splittertarn (green variation) clad soldier deploying SS-10 anti-tank missiles in the dismounted mode came in the other day.

I wonder which came first; the SS-10 or the Sagger?

    All the best,
    TJ

Very nice hand colored image from (most likely) the 1957-1959 timeframe. Thanks for sharing!

I have a few more (unfortunately) black and white photos of some Gebirgsjäger taken in 1959.

Note the missing top cover on the FAL

Those LIFE pictures are some of the best out there because of their quality photography and very high scan resolution.

Beautiful colored picture of PzGrenadiers! Always nice to see use of metal rank on the jackets. Not very common to see that.

I would say to prevent the bolt from jamming if weapon oil froze.

I don´t think so. He wont fire with a missing top cover. Maybe he just has just cleaned a jamming?

                Very strange.

As far as I know the FAL can be fired without the top cover.
                  Can anyone else confirm?

I've seen a slow motion video on Youtube of an FAL being fired without the dust cover, ostensibly to show what the bolt carrier is doing during a firing cycle. The weapon is certainly able to function this way, but having a big chunk of metal shuttling back and forth so close to one's face in the open is not a particularly appealing proposition under normal circumstances.

Note also that his selector is on full auto, and he is grasping the charging handle. If the magazine is empty and not fully inserted, it is possible that he was manually cycling the rifle while keeping the trigger pressed, just to observe the mechanics of a full auto firing cycle. Though this would still not answer the question - Whatever for?

I also wouldn't want to experience a premature firing. That would really ruin a day

I have an FAL and I can definitely confirm this. The cover is nothing more than that...a cover.
