OMG. Someone paid 300 pounds for your jacket? Until now the highest priced officers Affenjacke I've seen on eBay went for about 1/2 that price. You did very, very well parting someone with a big amount of money.

He said that the early tunics for Stabsoffiziere are very rare. I guess, that why someone paid so much? If it was Panzergrenadier or other more common unit, it would not probably sell for so much. But I have little clue about prices of early Bw uniforms.

There is no "Affenjacke", it is a normal long jacket (zweireihiger langer Rock).

Gentlemen...I bought it ! as the thread http://dev.wehrmacht-awards.com/foru...d.php?t=534102 started on the tunic states it is in remarkable condition...with no mothing or missing insignia, bar the pips, and I have the correct ones waiting to be applied...the last one sold on e-bay was half the price, but had issues, I was not prepared to put up with....the days of cheap/inexpensive early tunics is over, believe me I have looked, over the past months...a ratty leutnants short jacket is at a dealer site in Germany as we speak for 385 euro....this as Jens stated, is a rare tunic and is quite clearly a WW2 vets tunic and IMO worth every cent I paid..and Uwe is correct about its designation.
          Prost ! Steve.

            Hi Steve,

Everybody has their own sense of value. In that sense no price is too high or too low. Just depends on the individual's perception.

However, I personally wouldn't pay 1/2 that much for the jacket (Uwe is correct, of course, that this isn't an Affenjacke). I don't consider EUR 150 "cheap" considering these were EUR 80 just a few years ago. In comparison I just purchased a rather infamous BW general's tunic, trousers, and white jacket (1963-64) for about what you paid for the jacket.

I'm not impressed by the Stabsoffiziere collar tabs. Anybody could have put them on unless there is some "provenance" that the badging is original. I suspect the tabs on one or two of mine are not original. I have another that had metal insignia despite the 1956 manufacture date. Even if the badging is original, for me personally I don't think it adds much to the jacket. Instead...

What is more important is the overall condition. As you say they are often damaged by moths, stains, use, etc. Too often the damage is pretty bad. So on that count I can better understand your willingness to pay so much for it. Especially if this is an important piece for your collection, you've had too many moth eaten ones before, etc.

In the end the only thing that matters is that you're happy with what you have for what you paid. If you are, then that's a great thing for you and I congratulate you on that. And who am I to criticize for spending gobs of money on something like this. I'd probably pay 300 pounds for any number of bits of militaria from the 1950s, including genuine 1956 issued trousers!

Oh, and I forgot to say my personal opinion of militaria shop prices, or fixed prices on eBay items that are there for years, is they are an example of what an item is not worth. Because if the price was good the item would be sold already.

As an old friend of mine used to say about militaria shows... there are two types of people behind the tables; dealers and museum curators. The latter are the guys who show up to show after show with the same exact items at high prices. Dealers, on the other hand, actually sell what they have on their tables and therefore arrive at new shows with new items.

Just more of my two cents worth of musings

What is overpriced and what not?
A correct price is allway's the Money somebody is willing to pay for it.
And remeber, the good day's are over. All the good stuff we normally want isn't growing on Trees anymore so the prices are going up.
I remember a Thread from last Year where i told about my East German Para Backpack's. I put them for 120 Euros on my site, everybody said it's a high Price, sure, 20 Years ago I offered them for 60 Euros (120Marks) and nobody bought them. Now I sold the whole Lot within 10 Day's. So for rare Stuff you have to pay.

Yes, obviously if the supply is limited and the items are popular, the price always goes up over time. In the 1960s you could purchase a live full automatic MG42 in the United States for a few hundred Dollars. Last time I checked they are about $30,000. In 10 years they might be worth $40,000. If you buy one now at $30,000 you will turn a profit in 10 years. But if you pay $40,000 for one today, when others are paying only $30,000, then in 10 years you will only break even.

My point is that overpaying compared to average price at the time is never a good financial investment strategy. But money isn't everything! Sounds like Steve doesn't want to spend time/energy looking for a great condition jacket. He decided to invest more money instead of more time/energy to get the jacket he wants. Since time/energy is also very limited, it is a very sane strategy! I do this for some items too for exactly the same reason. He's happy with his purchase, so I am happy for him.
