    Saarland Polizei 1948-57

I found this interesting website about the Saarland with infos of Polizei of the Saarland under French protection in the years 1948-57, before organisation of the Saarland in the BRD (approriate, because I was in the Saarland last week). Not exactly BRD, but Saarland at this time had strange position between BRD and French Republic. This is not a very well-known subject. Website is in German, articles to police under Polizei on right side of homepage:

    http://www.saar-nostalgie.de/

To summarise for non-German speakers: The police was organised in a Landespolizei (State Police) with Verkerhspolizei in the cities with blue uniforms, Gendarmerie with grey uniforms in less urban areas, the Landeskriminalpolizei (Criminal Police) and the Saarbataillon (paramilitary security police, become Bereitsschaftspolizei in 1956) with khaki uniforms. Later blue uniforms adopted for all units. The style is after French Police. The motorised units wear a protective helmet like French Police of the time. Some Tshakos were worn for state visit of Konrad Adenauer on 1.1.57 on occasion of return of Saarland to Germany.

I would assume, that these uniforms are very hard to find now, because never many police (over 1000 only)?

Great... Before the Saarland was integrated into the BRD, the then prime minister of the Saarland wanted to establish the French occupied Saar-Gebiet as independent country. The Saarbataillon was an organisation between Bundeswehr and BGS, foundet maybe as a prototype for an own army of the Saarland.

Saarland has always been a tough state for police collectors. The patches during this time period are extremely rare to find. One that is not shown on the uniforms is "Bereitschaftspolizei" you can see it here:

        http://www.huntzmanpatches.com/GERMA...and%28C%29.htm

Also shown on this page is the very rare sport suit patch (white patch).

          Huntzmann,
interesting collection. Apparently Saarbataillon was renamed Bereitschaftspolizei on 13.09.1956.

The website now has photo of the caps to the uniforms:

An early Saarland Gendarmerie tunic (pre1952) appear on ebay. First that I have seen. The seller want high price for it, but it very rare, so that has sense. Here the link, if anyone interested:
