    is this a Bundesgrenzschutz helmet?

This is an ET64 m42 helmet which has been resprayed in a rather professional way. The colour appears to be the RAL 6012 colour which was used from 1951 to 1976 by the West-German Bundesgrenzschutz.

But if this is an early bgs helmet, shouldn't it have fixed chinstrap bales welded onto the shell?

Interesting. The two types I'm familiar with do, indeed, have welded fittings for the chin strap. One type has no vent holes, the other has the typical reinforced style vent holes. The Polizei helmets I'm familiar with are also of the same two types.

I'm pretty sure the BGS recycled some leftover wartime helmets for use. Maybe this is one?

      Helmet

      That´s right, Jeroen,

the BGS used former Wehrmacht helmets; usually with an self-constructed
lining with welded-on strap hangers in the shell.
But I too have an BGS-coloured M42 with no such hangers.I´m sure there
are Wehrmacht helmets in original configuration used by the BGS;they
take everything they could get in 1951.....

      Best regards
