        Fascinating stuff.

Would these have been for the 'Guilds'? I assume that they have no military connection, but I am curious as to whether they would be worn with some form of uniform, albeit civilian in nature.

Yes, you are absolutely right. Generally not worn with any uniforms. One (kind of) exception is the wear of a special costume by mostly carpenters, who are on the "Waltz" (journeyman years).
          https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Journeyman_years
And of course the miners, who have a costume ("Tracht") for special ceremonies etc.

here's an example of the carpenter buckle in wear.
typical dress since the middle ages for wandering students learning to become a craftsman, still in practice today.
            clothing is of corduroy fabric.

              metzger buckle

this one is for a fleischer or metzger,or in english slaughter.
I have a small collection of slaughterhouse memorabilia were this buckle fits into nicely.
it's a little smaller then the other buckles in this thread.

                kees,

Interesting thread. I have some of these buckles but none that you haven't posted already.

                Proud Kraut,

Thanks for the wiki link. I didn't know where the term "journeyman" came from. An interesting piece of news and interesting to see the pictures kees posted of the practice being kept alive.

                Regards,

                Gordon

Do we have a Bundeswehr Koppelschloss (belt buckle) thread as well here? Couldn't find one.

Lars,I already have 4 different BW buckles laying ready but as I found out today they have some nasty copper oxidation wich I must remove first.
                    tomorrow hopefully.
the green stuff rubbed onto the leather as well.
if there is a thread I will find it and post these.
if not were gonna start one.
and Gordon;nice you find it interesting, thats always the question with items not seen on the WAF before.bit of a gamble if anyone likes it.
                    all the best,
                    kees

                        Lars,

I was collecting belts and buckles to start a BRD belt and buckle thread but now that kees has started a civilian buckle thread perhaps we need a dedicated BW buckle thread as well. I have some that I could contribute. Looking forward to seeing your thread.

                        Regards,

                        Gordon

                          OLC feldbinde

This aluminium OLC gold finished buckle could be confused with something valuable.
It's however for wear during carnaval for drumbands and dressed up members of karnaval associations.
this one from the seventies but for sale brand new with every possible waist size belt attached.

Germans do love uniforms, don't they? It never ceases to amaze me how formalized the trades are in Germany compared to the US. Not to mention the spiffy outfits and shiny belt buckles!
