    granaten hand DM41 splitter

this wooden box is for the fragmentation handgrenade DM41.
it's out in the open for a few days, and before it disapears again for the next years,I thought I might as well show it.
I was wondering if the GJ90 is a unit marking.

    Hi!

GJ90 is a "Munitonsaustauschkode", a special code for every ammunition piece.

    for example:

    AD60: 9mmx19 catridge
    AB22: 7,62mmx51 cartridge
    AM31: 7,62mmx51 blank ammo

So GJ90 is the special code for the hand grenade.

    Bye
    Frank

Have to look for mine. I still have 10 left, in the moment filled with Carbide.
Here you can see the Insert Cases for 10 ea. Grenades, so 3 of the Plastic Cases are in a wooden Box.

        Frank;thanks for that info.
I would never have found that out myself.
I had some small hope for GebirgsJager or something but knowing what it stands for is satisfying even more.
and Nico;nice to see the inserts.
I use mine and all other ammo boxes for storage as well.
        no explosives however.
is that carbide for shooting footballs with large milkcans?
        all the best.

(Via the writing on it maybe ? ) Thanks.

No, on the wooden box only the date of filling the grenade with TNT is mentioned.

In the top picture you can read "GEF 9-63" that means that the grenade was filled ("Gefüllt") with TNT in September 1963. The grenades body could be produced long before that date.

Edit: The number after the "DM" is the German model code. DM means "Deutsches Modell", so the Hand ´grenade type GJ90 is the German model 41 and the fuze is the german model 72, which is not the year. It is only a count.

So on the wooden box in the picture we can learn:

              30 Granaten Hand DM 41
              Splitter
              MIT HDGR Z DM 72
              GEW 27 kg
              VOL 0,046 m³
              GEF 9-63
              LOS DN-200

30 Grenades, handheld, German model 41
              Fragmental grenade
              with fuze german model 72
weight of the full box 27 kg
volume (space) needesd of the box 0,046 m³ (important for air delivery and depot storing
              filled September 1963
charge serial number DN-200 made at Diehl-Nuremberg (DN)

That is the GJ90. I threw them still in 1991 to 1993 during my service. After that we only got the plastic DM51.
