Also - what is the reason for the "half shank" version of this button (as seen on the left, below)?

Long shank for the front of the tunic, short for the pockets..

And on doublebreasted items, such as Greatcoats or Affenjacken etc. the side that is buttoned needs longer ones than the side that has not to be buttoned.
