    Photoalbum PzGrenBtl 293

    Hello everybody,

I am in the possession of a nice photoalbum from a Fähnrich who served with amongst others the 2. Kompanie of PzGrenBtl 293 between 1962 and 1964, but I never really showed pictures of it. If there is any interest I could post the photographs here. I have already posted some of them below. Enjoy!

    With kind regards,

    Koen.

Great pictures ! Especially as they are technically good also ! Often you find interesting objects in those private pictures but most often they are quite unclear...

Team - Today I received these pictures of 3. Panzerdivision soldiers graduating from basic training. The division was originally headquartered in the northern German city of Buxtehode.

Since they are from roughly the same time period as Koen's pictures (1962-1964), I decided to place them here.

They're decent photos, but don't come close to Koen's in terms of detail!

First up we'll see a squad photo with stacked early model G-3s taken in front of "Kantine II." You can see the 3. Panzerdivision shoulder patch and a gefreiter stripe on the soldier standing in the middle of the photo with his head turned to the left. It's good to see that the selector levers on the G-3s are set to "safe / Sicher."

According to author Joerg Hormann, Bundespresizdent Heinrich Luebke approved the wear of divisional patches on November 27, 1962. Airborne and mountain troops had already taken to wearing shoulder sleeve insignia prior to that date.

Can anyone recognize the Kaserne from the carving over the Kantine door?

In this formation shot we can see a rather short Gefreiter positioned second from the left.

Barely visibly in the adjacent formation is an individual wearing Unteroffizieranwaerter (UA / Gefreiter) stripes.

It is my understanding that the word Gefreiter was derived from a term meaning "he who is free from menial tasks". Can anyone confirm?

                On the march.

Given the amount of smirks on the faces of the troops, graduation day must finally be here!

                  Group photo.

Note the leather dress belt and schiffen worn by the NCO in the center of the front row. The soldier sitting on the NCO's right is wearing a single ribbon, the only soldier in the photo wearing one. Presumably this is one of the physical fitness award ribbons.

Note too the P-1 holster and helmet worn by the individual second from the right in the front row. Was he pulled off of guard duty just for the picture?

My thanks again to Koen for his willingness to share his wonderful photos and for starting this excellent thread.

                  All the best,
                  TJ

                    Hello everybody,

Thanks for all the comments! Thomas, those are some nice photographs with nice details as well. The photographs are taken at the Schlieffen Kaserne, where PzBat 83 and 84 were stationed. At the first picture where the "Kantine II" sign is there used to be a large bust or something of a German soldier.

Here are some more photographs from the album!

                    "III. Zug."

                    "am Schießplatz"

                    "Nato-Partner"

                    "Biwakübung, 4 Tage bei -20°C"

                    "am Lagerfeuer"

                    "Sturmlauf"

Koen - Thanks for identifying the kaserne and the possible units depicted in my pictures - excellent! I thought I would have puzzled people for a long time trying to figure that one out.

I didn't think you could top your first selection of pictures; man was I wrong!

I'm especially fond of the bivouac pictures. I have to admit however, that as a collector I was horrified to see the marching boots dangling over the fire...

I also like the picture of the SPz-lang IFVs parked next to the First Sergeant's Lkw 5 t truck. A platoon with the company commander's vehicle and the Kompaniefeldwebel truck?

Thanks again for the information and great pictures.

                      All the best,
                      TJ
