    Your favorite German Military Marches

    Gentlemen,

I'm sure this area can be disputed but after reading the revived topic of the Wachbataillon I got to thinking about German military marches. Many thanks to Mr. Thomas J. Cullinane Jr. who posted some interesting videos of the Bataillon on parade featuring some of the famous Prussian inspired musical cadences. Anywho I really started thinking; What good is a collection of Bundeswehr militaria without the music that sets the tone of the parade? I've always been a fan of drill & ceremony so sharp uniforms and precise formations have always been of particular interest. I recently went on amazon.com and for $12.00 USD purchased a copy of German Military Marches performed by the Luftwaffe band & Conducted by Hauptmann Helmut Witten. I must say it has a good selection of marches and sounds rather nice as I sit and relax within the environment of my collection room/office. One of my favorites is of course 'Grosser Zapfenstreich' and 'Marsch des Yorckschen Korps' I'm sure their are others out there who have an interest in the topic of the Bundeswehr military band or perhaps even just the Marches themselves. So let's hear it Gents what are some of your favorite German military marches or does anyone have any military band uniforms they would like to share?

    Sincerely,
    DeWayne

I agree, nothing like a good military march to get the blood pumping and set the mood for some quiet time with the favorite pieces in your collection. One of my favorite places to buy German military march music is Brandenburg Historica.

Every good ceremony has to begin with the "Regimentsgruß"

          http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AIl9JmlBd0U

Except the "Großer Zapfenstreich", the most important German military ceremony. There it has to be - of course - the "Marsch des York'schen Korps"

Being new to the world of German military collecting I must ask because its long been a curiosity of mine, what is the name given to the ceremonial piece carried which holds the federal standard, it has the red and yellow tassles suspended from two sides of it and is carried I guess amongst the procession of an Honor Guard?

That's a "Schellenbaum" (Turkish Crescent). You'll find more about it here:

                http://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Schellenbaum

The bearer of the Schellenbaum, the flag and, in some cases, the tambourmajor are wearing special white gauntlet gloves "Stulpenhandschuhe". I will post pictures of them later.

I wonder how the nickname 'Jingling Johnny' came to be of use for a Turkish Crescent?

                            Hello Lars

Very interesting information , thanks .
The short version is very similar to the gloves of the Fallschirmjäger ( upper side that is )

                            Regards , Johan
