    Historical Bw on the march

    Last saturday my collectors mate Jens and I participated on the annual Scharnhorst Marsch. We used the shortest range of 10 km (20 and 30 Kilometer were also possible), and we managed the tour in 2 hours 5 minutes.

    I wore my 1958 Splittertan suit, my friend a complete 60´s Filzlaus unform.

    There were ca. 400 Bundeswehr reservists on the event, and a lot of questions were to be answered and old tales were given.

    Next year again

    Bye

    Frank and Jens - Glueckwunsch!

    So what uniform was more suitable for marching?

    Frank - Did you have to drink more beers after the march than Jens or was it the other way around? Did Jens wear the helmet for the whole march?

    In any event, great job! Thanks for sharing your pictures.

    All the best - TJ

      Why does the Bundeswehr do not maintain the Splittertarn?
      I can not understand this?

        Arthur,

        There were many reasons for getting rid of the Splittertarn uniform.
        1-it was not warm enough to wear in the cold weather without a specially designed set of underwear worn under it;
        2-the material was noisy and it was almost impossible to move quietly in it;
        3-the snaps tore out of the cloth relatively easily.
        All that being said, they could have developed a better uniform in this camouflage pattern instead of the Filslaus which was designed to replace it.

        Regards,

        Gordon

          Hi!

          My friend ´s Filzlaus was much more uncomfortable. He had to wear long underpants because the very rough cloth of the trousers.

          I only wore the grey shirt under the camos, so it was quite easy on the march. But the Brotbeutel used as a backpack was uncomfortable. I wore the helmet only halöf of the way, but Jens the most of the turn because the Filzlaus sidecap was impossible to use in the warm weather.

          I had my Garand with me, Jens couldn´t use any weapons because of the German law. For using the G1, Uzi or G3 we need a special permission.

          Next year we will participate with a bigger "historical marching section".

            Frank,

            Interesting comments. The best way to find out how a uniform or equipment works is to actually wear like you and your friend did on a march. Looking forward to a report on the bigger contingent next year.

            Regards,

            Gordon

                I agree in all points.
                Thats why the Bundeswehr had to introduce a new uniform. After a series of tests they decided to introduce the "Filzlaus". But it was not possible to print the camouflage on this kind of wool - so it had to stay oliv. Thats what I have been told.
