I found out in late 2009 from relatives that the Karfreit-Kaserne in Brannenburg (Oberbayern) was due for closure in 2010. Unfortuneatley by the time I made it over there to visit last Spetember, it was already shut down and weeds starting to grow. For those of you not familiar, the kaserne was built in 1935 for the Wehrmacht. After the war, it was used by the US Army, then the British until it was turned over to the Bundeswehr in 1958. It housed
Gebirgspionierbatallion 8 (my uncles' old unit) until it closed when the batalion moved to Ingolstadt.
Has anyone heard anything as to the fate of the Kaserne? Its certainly one of the most interesting (and talk about a beautifull location) I'm hoping its not doomed to be demolished, alot of history will be lost. As of Jan 2011 I have heard no further news.
