Hilfseinsatz in Algerian,1965

Gentlemen,

I found a article which is German and it's about German flying transports from Luftransportgeschwader 62 and Luftransportgeschwader 63 flying into Algeria for relief efforts. Does anyone knows about the effort that can tell me about it in English. I knew that Oberst Werner Guth was Kommodore of Luftransportgeschwader 62. He was a Me-110 flying destroyer pilot of World War II. Who was the Kommodore of Luftransportgeschwader 63? It seems to me that the German transports of the Bundesluftwaffe had done a lot of relief efforts in Africa than any continant of the world. I also looked at an article about Hilfseinsatz in Mauretanien started on March 31,1965. I would like to know about it also in English. Thank you.

Edward - According to Die Bundeswehr 1955-1995 by Reinhard Teuber, the Kommodore of Luftransportgeschwader 63 was Obstlt Horst Rudat.

He apparently stayed in command until March 1973!

Same Man

Dear Sir,

The same Horst Rudat who was a World War II bomber pilot and Knight's Cross holder! It's pretty interesting to note that plenty of WWII Luftwaffe veterans who were bomber or fighter pilots,to be air transport pilots in the Bundesluftwaffe.

Edward - That's a very interesting observation.

I wonder if flying fighters and bombers was (and is) a "young man's game" and these World War II era pilots were no longer physically capable of "pulling the g's" necessary for supersonic flight.

Would a more informed WAF member be able to weigh in on this subject?
