    Troppentarn shirt

    While trolling through a local surplus store today I happened accross a stack of modern Bundeswehr troppentarn shirts. Most were fairly humdrum but I found one that interested me, it has a round velcro patch backing machine swen on the right sleeve and a shield shaped one on the left. So I parted with $15.00 and took it home. I'm assuming the round one is for the green/white ISAF patch, but I have no idea what to try to look for for the shield-shaped one on the left. My knowldge is more on cold-war era stuff.

    Does anyone have a opinion? There is a ISAF Bundeswehr "feldpost 2002" patch on ebay that may work, I have no idea if thats a total fantasy piece or not. Id love to badge up this shirt and hang it with its older brothers from 30 years ago.

    There are many possible badges, but I'm not knowledgeable enough to recommend something. However, I can help you go about asking the right questions of people who do know

    Find the production date of the shirt. Do not put anything on it that is older than the shirt. 2002 deployment? Don't bother if the shirt is 2006. That sort of thing.

    On the other hand, it is reasonable for the badge to be 2 or so years newer than the shirt. 2002 shirt, 2002-2004 deployment is entirely possible.

    My advice is figure out a timeframe and then post here. I'm sure one of the regulars knows the historical rotations of German units for a specific timeframe. It should be fairly easy from there, especially since many units use a similar sized/shaped badge. With some poking around you should be able to locate something that will work.

    And remember... the unit might not be Heer!

      The shirt is 2003 mfg. Yes indeed it may very well be Luftwaffe or even marine.

      So lets figure 2003-04 time frame.

        PASSAUER8884,

        Sorry to say that finding the exact correct badge for the shield shaped one will be virtually impossible. As Steve says, individual rotations have their own badges made. At the same time, countless units have their own badges made in theatre. Period pictures illustrate soldiers wearing their shirts with velcro patches but no badge in place so it could be left with out badges or just put the ISAF badge on it. I would caution here that ISAF badges have been widely copied and often in the wrong size. It is my experience that the normal BW ISAF patch is 40mm in diametre and your replacement badge should be the same size as the velcro patch on your shirt. Name tags for these shirts are readily available on ebay.de and most of these are probably made for the collector market as well. I wouldn't worry about that as long as it matches the style normally in use in the field.
        Good luck in badging your shirt. I've given up trying to find a badge that will fit the shield shaped velcro patch on my shirt.

        Regards,

        Gordon

          Thats the conclusion that I have come to as well. I guess I'll just do my best to have something that looks "right" and call it good. Not really my area of interest anyway. I'm more into the cold-war era stuff. Dont get me wrong the modern stuff has a story all its own, but I like the pre-flecktarn days the best.

            That patch you are asking about is a 2 piece versionof the ISAF patch. It would look like this but in the respective NATO member's camo pattern, which can be seen at this eBay auction;

              Looked up that patch on eBay, unfortuneatly, the sheild shaped velcro on the left side of the jacket in question has a flat top and rounder less pointed bottom than than the patch you speak of, which makes me belive its a unit patch. Course I could be wrong!

                Of course, I did see BW folks wearing these at KAF when they came in from Mazar-E Sharif.
